Whilst I understand it from a business point of view, it does feel like, as a Mac user, you are forced to upgrade every year. Obviously if you pay monthly this isn’t a big problem, but if you own the software outright, the upgrade price of £150 (US$195) feels a little steep just to use the latest version of an OS. This means that if you want to use Capture One with OsX Mojave, you need to upgrade to version 12. With the release of version 12, support for version 11 has now ended. Mac OSX Mojave supportĪs a Mac user, this is my biggest pet peeve with Capture One. Again, much like the sunstone, the existence and usage of such a tool seems to still be in question, probably due to little archaeological preservation. This has been shown in Vikings on the History Channel.Īnother popular navigation tool could have been the sunboard, also seen in the show. Such tools might be the famous “sunstone” that allowed them to see the location of the sun in the sky even during a cloudy day. There are a few, though, that have been popularized and could likely have existed. By that, I mean that the evidence and scholarship remains very contested about them. In general, there are no navigational tools that we have confirmed without doubt. Many agree that the development of the sail is what enable the Viking Age to begin so strongly. The oar remained in use, but the sail added an additional advantage. As for sails, they were adopted just before the Viking Age, from around 800 CE. The steering oar was placed on the starboard side, which itself comes from the word stýra (to steer). Large iron anchors and rivets were made separately by smiths. All using simple tools such as axes, hammers, wedges, planes, rivets, etc. The end result was a strong yet flexible ship. There is then a frame inside the hull for additional strength. There would then be a “shell” of planks that overlap (hence the “lap” in “lapstrake”) and are then nailed together. The ship was constructed on the backbone of the keel, stem, and stern. A detailed diagram of this construction method can be viewed above. Their construction method is known as Lapstrake (or “clinker” construction). You can bend wood by soaking it and slowly moving it into the desired curve. They had lost the technology of the saw, and so they split wood along its natural grain, which actually resulted in stronger “cuts.” To obtain the required curve, the wood was naturally bent and fresh. Overall, their methods for construction were very natural. As a result, shipbuilding itself had an “art” to it. ![]() Complexity Built from SimplicityĪs the amount of labor and expense suggests, building these ships was much like artwork. All these benefits in their ships is what allowed them to raid the coasts of Europe by being able to “park and raid” to the complete surprise of the inhabitants. They were also large enough to carry quite a lot. Their shallow drafts allowed them to navigate rivers, yet also open waters. They were lighter, slimmer, and faster than other ships. Scandinavia’s obsession resulted in, arguably, the most advanced ships of the medieval world. We see in later records the rise of a tax to help pay for shipbuilding as Scandinavia began to centralize, called leiðangr. In the end, building a ship was a huge financial expense. This resulted in 460 workers of surplus, but was usually paid for through plunder. Sailing and maintaining a ship of this size required 70 men. This resulted in a surplus production of 100 people in one year. According to these efforts, it took around 40,000 working hours to build a 30 meter longship. Through experimental archaeology, scholars have been able to gain insight into their process of shipbuilding. As a result, we see a strong symbolic importance attached to their ships and the sea. So, given their geographical advantages and conditions, maritime development was inevitable. Scandinavia is host to many inland waterways that lead to the sea. ![]() Also, do recall Lesson I, in which we discussed that coastal regions were prime settlement points (fertile soil, less severe, etc.). Scandinavia was well suited for heavy maritime development, because it was far easier to travel by sea than by land (unless it was winter). The poem above is among my most favorite, for it so beautifully demonstrates and admiration for the sea and their ships. Scandinavia had a culture that placed great significance on the sea. So, be on the look out next week for those examples (lots of pictures). The second portion will provide many examples of various ship types (yes, there is more than just the longship). This portion of the lesson will be discussing the reasons for such advanced maritime development in Scandinavia, as well as their methods for construction and navigation. This lesson begins a two-part lesson on the impressive ships that allowed the Vikings to expand their presence in the medieval world. Those that are enslaved through indentured servitude are “decently treated, living lives almost as good as the citizens themselves except that they are expected to do a little bit of extra work, since they’re accustomed to it. That being said, the Utopians treat their slaves justly.Īs the severity of a slave’s slavery is determined by judging the entire situation-each slave is treated in a manner appropriate circumstances surrounding their enslavement. The Utopians assign this sort of work not only because it is morally hardening and labor intensive but also because “they are also concerned with ensuring that nothing dirty or filthy is brought into the city for fear that the stench of putrefaction will corrupt the air people breathe and spread diseases” (More 104). A final example is “in the assembly rooms all the especially dirty or heavy tasks are done by male slaves” (More 105). Another example of the task assigned to slaves is assisting travelers between cities where they “drive the oxen and takes care of needs” (More 107). For engaging in such activities, they believe, slowly destroys our capacity for compassion, which more than any other sentiment is the one that distinguishes human beings from other animals” (More 104). Hythloday specifies a few examples of these tasks, such as slaughtering and butchering meat because “ do not want their citizens to become hardened to the butchering of animals. Slaves are the most logical source of labor for the toughest, riskiest, and dirtiest work that needs to be done. The tasks done by slaves in Utopia are those tasks which are labor-intensive, require little skill, and/or those that normal Utopians would find to be beneath them. ![]() The ability to change the magnitude of the punishment depending on the severity of the crime and its circumstances is not possible with the death penalty. Moreover, by not killing a person through capital punishment, slaves are given a chance to redeem themselves for “if their behavior suggests that they regret their evil deeds even more than they dislike their punishment, their servitude will be lightened or brought to an end” (More 131). Also, by enslaving those that “have committed crimes in foreign cities and been condemned to death” (More 127) they save the criminal’s life from the death penalty. For if they live, the community benefits from their labor, and at the same time they are continuing reminder to others who might be tempted to follow in their footsteps” (More 131). “Generally seriously offenses are punished with slavery, for they think this deters potential offenders as effectively as would the death penalty, and society benefits more than it would if they were in a hurry to do away with the guilty. Slavery is considered just in Utopia because it is very effective in penalizing and deterring crime. The people who are enslaved by Utopians are people who had a choice in whether they were to be enslaved or not, either they chose to commit a crime for which they were penalized by enslavement or they voluntarily submitted themselves to unfree labor. These are people that, of their own free will, submit themselves to unfree labor but are “decently treated, living lives almost as good as the citizens themselves” (More 128). There is a third form of ‘slavery’ in Utopia which amounts to indentured servitude. Another situation is “those who fail to remain faithful to their spouses are punished with the strictest form of slavery” (More 130). If they dare do it again, they are condemned to slavery” (More 108). ![]() One crime for which a person would be enslaved is if “anyone who leaves their own territory for reasons of their own, and is caught traveling without the governor’s passport…is brought back…and is severely punished. Granted, what exactly constitutes a ‘dreadful crime’ is not exactly defined by Raphael Hythloday-however, he does give a few examples. In Utopia, “slaves are either people who have been condemned to slavery because of some dreadful crime they have committed in Utopia, or else people who have committed crimes in foreign cities and been condemned to death” (More 127). The slaves of Utopia are enslaved for a just reason, they “are not people who have been capture in battle” (More 127) and the “children of slaves are not born into slavery” (More 127). This form of penalty is viewed as more just and effective in punishing for crimes committed and deterring people from committing them in the first place. In Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, the Utopian society penalizes the most serious transgressions with enslavement. ![]() Since the beginnings of civilization, humans have searched for a just and effective way to penalize those that break the laws of society and to deter people from breaking them in the first place. |
